Purpose and Scope
These guidelines provide general recommendations to help achieve a direct, drop-in fit when installing new components from Superior Aircraft Components. Because individual aircraft may differ due to prior repairs, alterations, upholstery work, and undocumented modifications, final fitting during installation may be required.
These recommendations do not replace applicable aircraft maintenance manuals, approved technical data, installation instructions, or regulatory requirements.
Installer responsibility: The installer is solely responsible for verifying compatibility, proper installation, airworthiness, and safe operation of the completed installation. All work should be performed by appropriately qualified personnel in accordance with applicable FAA regulations and approved data.
Retain the Original Component
Keep the original component until the new part has been installed and inspected. The original part is a valuable reference for mounting locations, alignment, clearances, and overall fit.
Before Modifying the Part
- Compare the new component with the original before drilling, cutting, trimming, coating, painting, or otherwise modifying it.
- Temporarily position the new component in the aircraft to confirm general fit, orientation, dimensions, cutouts, mounting points, and compatibility with the intended installation.
- Verify that you have received the correct component for your aircraft and project before beginning any modification.
- Once a component has been drilled, cut, trimmed, painted, coated, installed, or otherwise modified, it may no longer be eligible for return.
- If the component does not appear to fit correctly, stop and contact Superior Aircraft Components before making modifications. Provide order information, aircraft model, tail number, and clear photographs of the area in question.
Locating and Drilling Mounting Holes
- Use the original component as a reference for locating existing mounting points. Carefully align the original and replacement components before transferring hole locations.
- Treat existing holes as reference points only; previous repairs or alterations may have changed their location or condition.
- Use a sheet-metal hole-locating tool, transfer punch, template, or similar method to accurately establish mounting-hole locations.
- Begin with a pilot hole and enlarge gradually to the required final size. Ensure appropriate hardware clearance without causing binding or unnecessary stress.
- Deburr all drilled or cut edges and inspect the surrounding area before installation.
- Use only hardware appropriate for the installation and consistent with the aircraft maintenance manual, approved installation data, or other applicable technical documentation.
Trimming and Final Fit
- Carefully trim edges as necessary to achieve the desired fit with surrounding panels, structure, upholstery, and interior components.
- Remove material in small increments and trial-fit the component frequently. Removed material cannot be replaced.
- Expect adjacent upholstery and interior components to shift or relax when the original part is removed; final trimming may be needed for an even, professional appearance.
- Maintain sufficient edge distance around mounting holes and avoid removing material that could compromise the strength or function of the component.
- Do not cut, drill, crease, or otherwise modify an electroluminescent element or illuminated area unless specifically authorized by Superior Aircraft Components. Doing so may permanently damage the component.
Operational Clearances
- For components installed near doors, windows, flight controls, control cables, switches, circuit breakers, avionics, or other movable or operable equipment, check clearances carefully after installation.
- Operate all affected equipment through its complete range of motion and verify that nothing binds, rubs, interferes, or places stress on the new component or surrounding structure.
- Confirm that adequate clearance is maintained to prevent contact, chafing, snagging, or interference during normal aircraft operation.
- Ensure that trimming around moving or operable equipment does not create openings that could allow loose objects or foreign debris to enter and interfere with operation.
Final Inspection
After installation, complete the following checks:
- Confirm that all mounting hardware is secure and properly installed.
- Inspect the component for distortion, cracking, binding, or excessive stress.
- Verify the operation of all nearby controls, switches, avionics, doors, and windows.
- Confirm that illuminated components operate correctly, if applicable.
- Remove all tools, metal shavings, loose hardware, and other foreign-object debris.
- Complete all required inspections and maintenance-record documentation.
